New Colonists Arrive at Poston, Arizona

"New colonists" arrive 9/1945 at Poston block 208. Albert S. Yava, Sr.
 
Albert Yava is an artist and linguist, and speaks English and the tribal languages of the Tewas, Hopis, and Navajos. He is a painter, and makes Kachian dolls. On September 1, 1945,  sixteen families, a total of seventy-eight people, arrived from the Hopi Reservation at Keams Canyon, Arizona. Photographer: Iwasaki, Hikaru. 9/1945.

Mrs. Sally Tunah



Mrs. Sally Tunah, a 75 year old Hopi Indian is the eldest "colonist" to arrive.  She is an accomplished pottery maker and arrived from the Hopi Indian Reservation at Keams Canyon, Arizona.  Photographer: Iwasaki, Hikaru.  9/1945.

      Albert Yava, Jr. 
Albert Yava, Jr., is the son of Albert and Virginia S. Yava, Sr. and is playing near his new home in Poston block 208.  Although Poston  is soon to be closed to Japanese Americans, it has already seen the beginning of a new group of residents, the American Indians.  Photographer: Iwasaki, Hikaru. 9/1945.
